The Dutch provinces of Flevoland, Gelderland and Overijssel have agreed to terminate their bus contract with operator EBS in mid-2029, years before its planned 2035 end, after the company reported heavy losses. EBS blames staff shortages, late deliveries of electric buses and grid congestion (a lack of capacity on the electricity network) that limits charging and forces unpaid extra kilometres; the provinces will provide undisclosed extra funding until then to keep services running. The case matters because bus firms in the province of Utrecht are also struggling with the shift to electric fleets, and the three provinces must now find new operators for July 2029.
