A violent downpour dropped 142 millimetres of rain on Madrigueras (a town of about 4,760 people near Albacete, in Castilla-La Mancha, south-eastern Spain), flooding streets and homes; firefighters found a 102-year-old woman dead in her house, where water had risen above a metre, and at least 90 people were rescued. Heavy rain also hit other parts of south-eastern and north-eastern Spain, and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez offered condolences and urged residents to follow emergency instructions. The floods come after Spain's hottest summer on record, with nearly 2,150 heat-related deaths reported in August alone.
