The visit comes as India's purchases of Russian oil have doubled since February, making Russia New Delhi's top crude supplier — a situation complicated by near-closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which has limited India's access to Iraqi and Saudi oil. The US Senate voted on 7 August to impose 100% tariffs on Indian imports if New Delhi continues buying Russian crude, though the bill still requires approval from the House of Representatives and President Donald Trump, who has temporarily eased Russia sanctions since the outbreak of war with Iran — leaving India caught between its energy needs and mounting Western pressure.
