The extension of the National Guard deployment in Washington, DC, will cost approximately $1.4 billion through January 2029, according to a Defense Department estimate provided to Congress. The figure, covering fiscal years 2027 to 2029, assumes an average of 2,500 Guard members remaining stationed in the US capital. The estimate was released in response to questions from Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and was first reported by The Washington Post.
The deployment began in the summer of 2025, when President Donald Trump issued an emergency order launching a law enforcement surge that his administration said was intended to reduce crime. Since then, hundreds of armed National Guard troops have patrolled Washington's streets, supported arrest operations, and carried out tasks ranging from snow removal to beautification projects. Numbers swelled to around 5,000 this summer as the city marked the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Last month, the Pentagon confirmed the mission would continue until January 20, 2029,
