Sean Grayson, the former Illinois police officer sentenced to 20 years in prison for the 2024 murder of Sonya Massey, has died in custody at age 32 from colon cancer, his lawyer confirmed. Grayson was convicted of second-degree murder after shooting Massey, a 36-year-old Black woman, in the face when she had called police to her Springfield home to report a suspected intruder — a killing that sparked nationwide protests and renewed debate over police brutality in the United States. Lawyers for the Massey family said in a statement: "Grayson's death in custody from cancer does not bring Sonya back," adding that they wished his family peace while noting that Sonya's family "will grieve her loss the rest of their days."
