The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has reported that the number of people displaced by Colombia's decades-long internal conflict doubled in 2025, with over 235,000 individuals forced from their homes and a further 87,000 affected by mass displacement events. The ICRC's annual report describes 2025 as the worst year for humanitarian consequences in the past decade, citing a surge in explosive device casualties — up by more than a third — and a near-doubling of community lockdowns imposed by armed groups. The findings underscore the fragmentation of Colombia's conflict since a 2016 peace deal with the FARC guerrilla group, as splinter factions and rival criminal organisations continue to compete for territory, presenting a mounting challenge for President Gustavo Petro's "Total Peace" negotiation strategy ahead of national elections on 31 May.
