Opposition coalition C64 (a platform of Congolese opposition groups named after Article 64 of the constitution, which grants citizens the right to resist unconstitutional seizures of power) has called off planned protests in the Democratic Republic of Congo after President Félix Tshisekedi announced the launch of a national dialogue. The group had accused Tshisekedi of orchestrating a "constitutional coup" by pursuing a referendum that could allow him to serve a third presidential term, and had planned a major mobilisation on 22 July to demand his resignation. Following African Union mediation, both sides agreed that the dialogue will be led by religious organisations and must be convened before 15 August, with C64 warning it will resume protests if the government moves forward with the referendum bill in the meantime.
