France will extend temporary licence suspensions for drivers caught using a mobile phone while driving to the whole country, Citizenship minister Marie-Pierre Vedrenne told Le Figaro on 2 January. About 20 departments (France's regional administrative districts), including Landes and Pas-de-Calais, already apply the measure, with suspensions of 15 days to six months on top of the existing €135 fine and three-point penalty. The government says phone use triples crash risk, and 3,515 people died on French roads in 2025.
