West Bengal (an eastern Indian state bordering Bangladesh) recorded a historic 92.03% voter turnout in the first phase of its 2026 state assembly elections on April 23, the highest since 1951. The surge in turnout percentage is partly explained by a four-month electoral roll revision that reduced the registered electorate by around 12% — from 40.57 lakh to 28.93 lakh voters — meaning the actual number of people who voted remained close to 24 lakh, similar to 2021 levels. Dakshin Dinajpur, Cooch Behar, and Birbhum districts led participation with turnouts above 93%, while polling proceeded amid isolated incidents of violence.
