The European Union has temporarily suspended imports of fresh beef, sheep and goat meat from Namibia after the country reported its first foot-and-mouth outbreak in its main commercial livestock zone in 60 years; the disease has since spread to 11 farms. The EU takes more than 80 percent of Namibia's beef exports, and about a quarter of the 40,000 direct jobs tied to exports to Europe could be affected, according to the EU ambassador. Namibia has imposed movement bans, roadblocks and intensified testing, while the EU recalls that a 2001 outbreak in Europe forced the culling of more than six million animals.
