Bangladesh's government has warned that ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be arrested and imprisoned if she returns from exile in India, where she has lived since being forced from power in August 2024. A state minister for foreign affairs said Hasina, who was sentenced to death in absentia by a war-crimes court for ordering a violent crackdown on a student-led uprising that the UN says killed 1,400 people, would face full legal proceedings upon any surrender. The warning follows Hasina's own statement to Reuters last week that she intended to return voluntarily in December, which officials dismissed as an attempt to rally fugitive members of her banned Awami League party.
