A court in Groningen (a city in the northern Netherlands) has sentenced Bas V., a man from the nearby village of Nieuwolda, to 15 months in prison — roughly four of them suspended — for sending threatening emails to 12 butcher shops across the provinces of Groningen and Drenthe last September. The emails warned shop owners to close immediately or face being killed with a machete, and a machete was indeed found when police searched his home; notes on his confiscated phone also described plans to acquire weapons to kill "people responsible for the humiliation of animals." Prosecutors had sought four years on terrorism-related charges, but the court ruled there was insufficient evidence that he intended to destabilise society, and ordered him into supported housing to receive treatment for gaming addiction, cannabis dependency, ADHD, and autism.
