Twenty-year-old Ethiopian runner Mekides Shimeles broke the women's course record at the 45th Rotterdam Marathon, finishing in 2:18:55 — three seconds under the previous mark — despite missing two water stations during the race. In the men's race, Ethiopia's Guye Idemo Adola took victory in 2:03:53 after overtaking Belgium's Bashir Abdi, who collapsed in the final two kilometres, though Adola's time fell 17 seconds short of the men's course record. Dutch athlete Filmon Tesfu claimed the national title with a seventh-place finish in 2:06:39.
