Zakhakhel tribesmen blocked the main highway leading to Torkham (a key Pakistan-Afghanistan border crossing in Khyber district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) on Saturday after two men were shot dead by motorcycle-riding assailants in the Sultan Khel area the previous evening — the third such attack since Ramazan. Led by tribal elder Malak Abdullah Khan, protesters announced they would form armed volunteer patrols, ban motorcycle riding, and bar Zakhakhel government employees from their duties until security improves; they also called for a boycott of polio vaccination campaigns and the closure of local schools. The demonstrators refused to engage with officials until a crackdown was launched against suspected militants in the Mazreena area, and the road blockade also halted the repatriation of Afghan families, leaving vehicles stranded at the border.
