Cavaye Yéguié Djibril, who served as president of Cameroon's National Assembly for a record 34 years, has died at the age of 86 in his home village of Mada in the country's Far North Region. His death comes just 50 days after he stepped down from the speakership he had held since 1992. A close ally of President Paul Biya — in power since 1982 — Djibril was a central figure in cementing executive dominance, overseeing the passage of a 2008 constitutional reform that abolished presidential term limits and granted Biya broad immunity from prosecution, drawing sustained criticism that the legislature failed to act as a meaningful check on presidential power.
