Kenyan wildlife officers are conducting a week-long operation to trap and relocate large crocodiles from Lake Baringo (a Rift Valley lake about 280 km north of Nairobi), where dramatically rising water levels have pushed the reptiles into close contact with nearby communities. The lake has expanded by roughly 70 percent since 2010, driven by extreme rainfall linked to climate change and the El Niño weather pattern, displacing tens of thousands of people and endangering those who remain. So far around 13 crocodiles weighing 200 kg or more have been captured and moved to a protected park, with authorities targeting at least 30, though residents are divided — fishmongers welcoming the relief from daily disruptions to their nets, while some locals worry the removals could deter tourists.
