Spain's socialist-led government has accused municipalities controlled by the centre-right Partido Popular (PP) of deliberately obstructing a landmark amnesty process for undocumented immigrants, with Social Security Minister Elma Saiz singling out the city of Madrid for refusing to cooperate. Saiz described the obstruction as driven by "racist and xenophobic instructions" from PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo, who opposes the scheme despite it receiving backing from employer associations, trade unions, and the Catholic Church. The regularisation process, which allows long-term undocumented residents to obtain legal status, has nonetheless seen strong early demand, with over 13,000 online applications submitted in its first hours and 35,000 appointment requests already logged, and the government says the deadline will remain 30 June regardless of PP non-cooperation.
