A Hong Kong court has been asked to order the confiscation of at least HK$127 million (roughly US$16 million) in assets belonging to jailed media tycoon Jimmy Lai, founder of the now-defunct Apple Daily newspaper. The city's Secretary for Justice filed the application under Article 32 of the national security law, targeting 63 bank accounts, two bail deposits totalling HK$10 million, a HK$2 million fraud-case fine, and shares in 17 related companies. The case is scheduled for a hearing on 8 July, and marks one of the most significant asset forfeiture actions taken against a prominent democracy figure since Beijing imposed the national security law on Hong Kong in 2020.
