Saudi Arabia has condemned what it described as an Iranian attack on the Saudi-owned supertanker Sidr in the Strait of Hormuz (the narrow waterway between the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Sea, through which roughly a fifth of global oil and gas shipments pass) late on Monday, which killed two Filipino crew members. The vessel, operated by Saudi national shipping company Bahri, was struck by projectiles north of Oman's Musandam Peninsula; a South Korean-owned tanker, Senegal Prosperity, was reportedly hit in the same area minutes later. Iran denied launching an attack, claiming instead that the two vessels had struck mines after using an "unauthorised route" through the strait — incidents that come amid a broader US-Iran military exchange, with Washington conducting air strikes on Iran and Tehran retaliating against US bases across the region.
