An oil tanker was hit by a projectile in the Strait of Hormuz (the narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea, through which roughly a fifth of the world's oil passes) off the coast of Oman, causing damage but no casualties, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations. Iran has maintained an effective blockade of the strait since the United States and Israel struck Iranian territory in late February, demanding tolls for passage and attacking vessels it accuses of bypassing its preferred route. The incident underscores the ongoing threat to global energy shipping lanes as diplomatic efforts, including Pakistani Army Chief Asim Munir's visit to Tehran to mediate, continue without resolution.
