Twelve fishermen from the Karaikal region (a small coastal enclave in southeastern India, bordering Tamil Nadu) were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on the night of 11 April after their mechanised boat allegedly crossed the International Maritime Boundary Line. The group had set out from Karaikal fishing harbour on the morning of 10 April and were intercepted roughly 60 nautical miles offshore. The arrests highlight the recurring tension over fishing rights in the Palk Strait, a long-disputed stretch of water separating India and Sri Lanka.
