Pradeep Purnekar, a local leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT), a Maharashtra regional party led by Uddhav Thackeray, was shot and attacked with a sharp weapon at his office in Thane, near Mumbai, on Tuesday night and died in hospital. Police have detained two of five suspects for questioning and are examining CCTV footage, but have not established a motive. Party MP Sanjay Raut questioned law and order in Thane and alleged Purnekar had opposed illegal activities and redevelopment-related interests, raising political pressure over the killing.
