Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori (leader of the right-wing Fuerza Popular party) has launched her five-year term with a 60% approval rating, against 24% disapproval, according to a Datum Internacional poll published Sunday by El Comercio. The survey — the first national measure since she took office on July 28 — comes despite her having won the June 7 runoff by just 49,641 votes out of over 18 million cast, one of the narrowest margins in Peruvian electoral history. Approval for Fujimori spans all regions of the country, with the economy and security topping public expectations; 87% of respondents backed her pledge to deploy the armed forces alongside the National Police to tackle crime.
