The AFC/M23 rebel alliance (an armed group controlling large parts of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo following a 2025 offensive) has suspended shared taxis and passenger boats on key routes after two travellers from government-held territory tested positive for Ebola in rebel-controlled areas. The restrictions come as the DRC's Ebola outbreak — caused by the Bundibugyo strain, for which no approved vaccine or treatment exists — has surpassed 5,000 confirmed cases and 2,378 deaths, making it the deadliest in the country's history. The dual crisis of active conflict and disease spread is straining containment efforts, with the World Health Organization warning that 70–80% of newly detected cases have no traceable epidemiological links and that the response remains underfunded, having secured only around 60% of the $115 million required.
