The European Union's Entry/Exit System (EES), which requires biometric data including fingerprints from non-EU travellers, entered a new phase on 6 September as temporary flexibility measures allowing member states to pause checks expired. Despite the deadline, full enforcement remains inconsistent: France faces continued delays due to technical faults in its EES software, leaving fingerprinting kiosks at Eurotunnel, Dover, and Eurostar's London St Pancras station non-operational. The aviation industry, including airline trade body IATA, has warned that EES-related disruptions are causing passengers to miss flights and damaging Europe's reputation, and is pressing the European Commission to extend discretionary powers through the end of 2026.
