Filipino actress and singer Lea Salonga was honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (the landmark stretch of Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles where entertainment industry figures are commemorated) on 4 September, becoming the first Filipina in history to receive the distinction. In her acceptance speech, Salonga dedicated the achievement to her hometown of Manila and the many collaborators who shaped her career, from her mother — who personally financed and sold her debut album — to directors, musicians, and audiences worldwide. The award-winning star of Miss Saigon and voice of Disney princesses Jasmine and Mulan expressed hope that her star would inspire future generations of Filipino artists to pursue careers in Hollywood.
