France Football has announced the 30-man shortlist for the 2026 Men's Ballon d'Or, with Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, Harry Kane and Erling Haaland among the headline names. The ceremony — the 70th edition of the award — will take place on 26 October at the London Palladium, marking the first time the event has been held in the British capital, chosen as a tribute to Stanley Matthews, who won the inaugural Ballon d'Or.
Mbappé, who plays for Real Madrid, did not lift a club trophy this season but made a compelling case through his performances at the World Cup, where he scored 10 goals for France to become the tournament's all-time leading scorer. Kane enjoyed perhaps the most statistically dominant season of any nominee, netting 73 goals in 65 appearances for Bayern Munich and England while helping Bayern secure a treble of Bundesliga, German Cup and German Super Cup titles. He also led England to the World Cup semi-finals. Haaland contributed 58 goals in 64 games for Manchester City and Norway, while Messi — an eight-time Ballon d'Or winner who recently announced his retirement from international football — registered 75 goal contributions in 49 matches for Inter Miami and Argentina, whom he guided to the World Cup final. Notably absent from the list is five-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo, despite having won the Saudi Pro League with Al-Nassr.
One distinctive statistical footnote of this year's shortlist is that 29 of the 30 nominees participated in the World Cup; the sole exception is PSG winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, whose native Georgia failed to qualify. Kvaratskhelia nonetheless earned his place through an outstanding club campaign, winning the UEFA Champions League with PSG for the second consecutive season and being named the competition's best player by UEFA's technical observers. The last time only one nominee on the Ballon d'Or shortlist had missed a World Cup was in 2006, when Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto'o — whose country also failed to qualify — reached the final standings on the strength of his La Liga and Champions League triumph with Barcelona.
Spain, as World Cup winners, leads all nations with seven representatives on the men's shortlist, including Barcelona's teenage star Lamine Yamal, defender Pau Cubarsi and midfielder Rodri. PSG alone account for eight nominees, among them Ousmane Dembélé, Achraf Hakimi and Kvaratskhelia. In a surprise inclusion, Senegal's Sadio Mané of Al-Nassr and Mexico's Julian Quiñones of Al-Qadsiah FC also feature. African representation extends to the goalkeeping category, where Cape Verde's Vozinha — who became a household name after helping his country advance from the World Cup group stage — is nominated alongside Morocco's Yassine Bounou, Senegal's Édouard Mendy, Spain's Unai Simon and Argentina's Emi Martinez.
On the women's side, the notable absentee is three-time winner Aitana Bonmati of Barcelona, who was injured in late November 2025 and only returned to action in May 2026. The leading contenders for the women's award include Barcelona striker Ewa Pajor of Poland, Alexia Putellas — recently moved to London City Lionesses — and Manchester City's Jamaican forward Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw. The full shortlists across all categories will be voted on ahead of the October ceremony, which will also honour winners in the young talent and goalkeeper categories.
