Finlay Tarling, a 19-year-old Welsh cyclist riding for the NSN Development Team, died on Friday after a collision during the eighth stage of the Tour of Portugal, one of the sport's established multi-day road races on the Iberian Peninsula. The incident occurred on the route between Melgaço, a town in northern Portugal near the Spanish border, and Fafe, with approximately 20 kilometres remaining in the stage. Portuguese national broadcaster RTP, which was televising the race, reported that Tarling was struck in a head-on collision by a van travelling in the opposite direction that had crossed onto the race course. Portugal's National Guard confirmed that the vehicle had invaded the road against the flow of traffic.

Race organisers immediately suspended the stage and cancelled the podium ceremony as a sign of respect. The remaining riders completed the route together without racing, with Tarling's teammates crossing the finish line as a group.
