A parasitic stomach illness has infected more than 1,400 confirmed cases across 41 U.S. states, with health officials warning the total could climb significantly higher as thousands of suspected cases remain under review. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has linked many cases to iceberg lettuce, and American investigators have pointed to growing facilities in Guanajuato, a central Mexican state, operated by produce firm Taylor Farms — which issued a recall on July 17. Mexico's Health Ministry has disputed the claim, saying no evidence links the outbreak to its territory, while the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has added to the confusion by initially reporting a positive test on Mexican lettuce, then retracting it as a false positive, before reaffirming that its supply chain investigation still points to the Mexican facilities.
