Mark Doyle, a veteran British journalist renowned for his frontline reporting across Africa, has died at the age of 67 following a short illness. Doyle joined the BBC in 1986 and became one of its most respected foreign correspondents, covering landmark events including the 1994 Rwandan genocide and Sierra Leone's brutal civil war, with his reporting credited by a senior British military commander as having influenced the UK's decision to intervene in Sierra Leone and save thousands of lives. BBC foreign editor Paul Danahar described him as a "legendary figure" and a "brilliant, brave, empathetic reporter."
