Two-time Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard has abandoned the 2026 race after crashing heavily during the 15th stage on Sunday, fracturing his collarbone and ending his hopes of a historic double with the Giro d'Italia he won earlier this season. The 28-year-old Dane, who was lying second overall, went down at a roundabout approximately 20 kilometres from the finish on the Plateau de Solaison in the French Alps, when his front wheel slipped from under him. He came to a halt against a kerb, visibly writhing in pain, and was helped into a medical vehicle with his right arm in a sling. His Visma-Lease a Bike team later confirmed that surgical intervention has been recommended and will be performed in the coming days. Mexican rider Isaac del Toro and American Sepp Kuss were among those also brought down in the crash, though del Toro was able to continue. Race leader Tadej Pogacar managed to avoid the incident.

The crash capped a difficult day for Vingegaard, which had begun in the early hours of the morning when anti-doping controllers from the International Testing Agency arrived at his hotel at 2:00 am for an unannounced test.
