The Zimbabwean government says close to 100,000 of its nationals have returned home from South Africa since late May, driven by intensifying xenophobic sentiment and an unofficial deadline set by anti-immigrant group March and March for undocumented foreigners to leave by 30 June. Authorities say more than 70% of returnees are women and children, who are being screened at the Beitbridge border crossing (the main land port linking Zimbabwe and South Africa) and supported through a reintegration programme involving government ministries, UN agencies, and NGOs including Doctors Without Borders. With an estimated two million Zimbabweans living in South Africa, officials warn the exodus could grow significantly, and Zimbabwe is also facilitating the passage of Malawian and Zambian nationals transiting through the country on their way home.
