Dutch cyclist Thymen Arensman was penalised ten seconds at Tuesday's Tour de France individual time trial at Lake Geneva after becoming so absorbed in his pre-race focus routine that he missed his scheduled start time, rushing to the podium only after realising his error. The Netcompany-Ineos (a professional cycling team) rider still posted the seventh-fastest time, but would have finished sixth had he departed on schedule — a costly lapse, though far short of the 2.5 minutes lost by Spanish legend Pedro Delgado in the 1989 Tour prologue. Arensman accepted full responsibility for the mistake, saying he intends to learn from it, while acknowledging that Remco Evenepoel's dominant winning ride — 1 minute 47 seconds faster — had rendered the error inconsequential for the stage victory.
