Ashly Robinson, a 31-year-old American lifestyle influencer known online as Ashlee Jenae, has died while on vacation in Zanzibar, the semi-autonomous island archipelago off the coast of Tanzania in East Africa. Robinson was found unconscious in her villa at the Zuri Zanzibar hotel on the night of 9 April and was taken to hospital, where she died hours later. No arrests have been made, and Zanzibar police say her partner, Joe McCann, 45, is being treated as a witness rather than a suspect.
The circumstances surrounding her death have raised serious questions. The trip was meant to be a joyous occasion: Robinson had just celebrated her birthday and accepted a marriage proposal from McCann in the days before her death. Her family described the visit as what should have been "one of the happiest of trips." Instead, Robinson's parents say they were not informed of the incident until roughly 11 hours after it occurred, when McCann contacted them and told them she was doing well. It was the hotel itself that later informed the family she had died. According to her family, McCann has not been in contact with them since that initial call.
Police have offered few clear answers. Zanzibar's North Unguja police chief, Benedict Mapujira, suggested that the couple had a disagreement before the incident and that hotel management had placed them in separate rooms — a claim the hotel has not confirmed. Officers initially indicated Robinson may have attempted to take her own life, but this has not been established. Authorities say they are awaiting an official medical examination to determine the cause of death. In a notable development, officials confirmed on Tuesday that McCann's passport has been withheld, though the local police chief maintained that there are no grounds to detain him. The hotel said it is cooperating with authorities and the US embassy.
Robinson's family has called her loss sudden, overwhelming, and full of unanswered questions. "Nothing about this loss feels real," the family said in a statement. The US State Department has confirmed her death and said it is providing support to the family. Tributes have continued to pour in on her social media pages, while online speculation about the circumstances of her death has grown steadily. The case highlights the difficulties families face when a loved one dies abroad, far from home, amid an incomplete and evolving official account.
