Australian police have alleged that a woman in her 40s stabbed her three children — all under the age of five — inside a vehicle at Valley Heights in the Blue Mountains (a mountainous region west of Sydney), killing one child at the scene on Sunday afternoon. The two surviving children and the woman, who is also considered a suspect, were taken to hospital in a critical condition; police say they intend to charge her with homicide if she recovers. The incident capped what New South Wales police deputy commissioner Peter McKenna described as an "unfathomable" weekend of domestic violence, after three women were also allegedly murdered in separate incidents across the state within a 12-hour period on Saturday.
