South Korean K-pop group NewJeans surprised fans on the night of 22 July with an unannounced video titled "2026 Summer of NewJeans" and a series of newly shot photos, marking the group's fourth debut anniversary and signalling a potential return to active music-making. The content, released on the group's official YouTube channel, Instagram and homepage at midnight without prior notice, featured four members — Minji, Haerin, Hyein and Hanni — and represented the group's first collective content in over a year and four months.
NewJeans, which debuted on 22 July 2022 and rapidly rose to global prominence with hits including "Attention," "Hype Boy," "Ditto" and "Super Shy," had been effectively sidelined since a protracted legal dispute with its agency, ADOR, a subsidiary of South Korean entertainment giant HYBE. The conflict erupted after the group's members sought to terminate their contracts following the dismissal of ADOR's founding CEO, Min Hee-jin, whom the members publicly supported. The Seoul High Court ultimately ruled that the members' contracts with ADOR were valid through 2029, blocking independent activities. Three members — Haerin, Hyein and Hanni — subsequently returned to the agency. ADOR has said it was discussing matters with Minji in a positive direction, though her formal return had not been confirmed at the time of the anniversary release despite her appearance in the new content.
The group's fifth member, Danielle, an Australia-born singer, was not included in the reunion material. ADOR announced it had terminated her contract, accusing her of engaging in independent entertainment activities; legal proceedings between the two parties are ongoing. On the anniversary night, Danielle posted a selfie on her personal Instagram account with the message: "Life gets cloudy sometimes, but the light always finds its way back in. Until then, keep shining. Forever grateful."
ADOR described Tuesday's release as "commemorative content produced for fans to enjoy together in celebration of the fourth anniversary of NewJeans' debut" and said specific plans for future activities would be announced once discussions with the members were fully concluded. Industry observers interpreted the coordinated release as a strong indication that group activities are progressing toward resumption. The anniversary content drew millions of views and likes within hours, though it also sparked pushback from a segment of fans rallying behind the phrase "NewJeans is five," in solidarity with Danielle.
The stakes are considerable. NewJeans reached No. 1 on the US Billboard 200 in August 2023 with their second EP, "Get Up," becoming only the second K-pop girl group to top that chart. Their last new release was the Japanese single "Supernatural" in June 2024. A formal comeback, even as a reconfigured four-member group, would mark one of the more closely watched returns in recent K-pop history — both for the music industry and for the millions of fans who followed the group's turbulent legal saga.
