Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Tuesday that trade negotiations with India are making "good progress" and that both countries aim to conclude a comprehensive trade agreement by the G20 summit (scheduled for December 14–15 in Miami). Speaking on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Carney also said he understood that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had confirmed a visit to Canada around that time, though no precise date has been set. The push to finalise talks is part of Carney's broader strategy to diversify Canada's trade away from the United States, following diplomatic tensions under President Donald Trump, and comes after a prolonged rupture in Canada-India relations triggered by the 2023 killing of Canadian Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia.
