Among the most popular viewing spots was Medinaceli, a hilltop town in north-eastern Spain, where spectators arrived hours in advance armed with chairs, hats and eclipse glasses to secure unobstructed views. The coastal town of Getxo, just north-west of Bilbao in the Basque Country — a semi-autonomous region in northern Spain — also fell within the path of totality. There, the Moon covered the Sun completely for only a few seconds at around 20:27 local time, with the Sun positioned just 8 degrees above the western horizon. As darkness fell across viewing sites nationwide, crowds broke into applause and cheering.
Totality lasted approximately one minute across Spain before the eclipse continued its arc toward the Mediterranean. The longest total phase of the event, lasting just under two and a half minutes, was recorded farther north off Iceland's west coast. Spain's position near the southern edge of the totality band meant that while the spectacle was brief, it was historically significant — the first such event visible from Spanish territory in over 100 years.
The influx of visitors placed considerable strain on local infrastructure, with hotels along the eclipse corridor reporting full capacity and local services stretched to accommodate the crowds. The timing proved challenging for authorities: Spain was simultaneously grappling with intense summer heat and active wildfires, prompting officials to roll out a major public safety campaign ahead of the event.
The eclipse underscores the growing global phenomenon of astronomical tourism, in which rare celestial events draw large international audiences to specific geographic locations.
