Both DR Congo and Senegal have been knocked out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after failing to hold onto leads in their round-of-32 matches. DR Congo, ranked 46th in the world and appearing at their first World Cup since 1974 (when the country competed as Zaire), took a seventh-minute lead against England in Atlanta before Harry Kane scored twice in the final fifteen minutes to seal a 2-1 English victory. Senegal's exit was even more dramatic: the West African side led Belgium 2-0 with just five minutes of normal time remaining, only to concede three goals — the last a converted penalty deep in extra time — as Belgium completed a stunning 3-2 comeback. Morocco remain the sole African team in the round of 16 after their penalty shootout win over the Netherlands earlier this week.
