Hong Kong-based Chinese-language outlet Initium Media (端傳媒, an independent digital news platform) swept the Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) Awards for Editorial Excellence on June 18, taking 10 prizes from 15 nominations — the most of any participating outlet. The wins spanned a wide range of categories, with gold awards for coverage of the global surrogacy industry, the tenth anniversary of Taiwan's Formosa Fun Coast dust explosion, a feature on surrogate mothers in Georgia, reporting on the future of AI and erotic content, and explanatory journalism on a major Hong Kong residential tower fire that killed 168. Additional silver awards recognised reporting on Hong Kong labour rights, the trial of media tycoon Jimmy Lai under the national security law, a Taiwan landslide disaster, Chinese visual media, and extreme weather. SOPA, a Hong Kong non-profit founded in 1982, is regarded as one of the Asia-Pacific publishing industry's most prestigious bodies; this year's awards, now in their 28th edition, drew 115 judges from around the world.
