Koeman announced his resignation on Instagram, writing: "Last night I took the decision to end my time as coach of the Dutch national team. We all dreamed of a World Cup where we would write history. That did not happen. Nobody is more disappointed than I am. As national coach, you carry that responsibility."
The match, played in Monterrey, Mexico, was a tense and dramatic encounter. The Netherlands took the lead through Cody Gakpo, who converted a swift counter-attack assisted by Crysencio Summerville. Morocco, who dominated large periods of play, were repeatedly denied by an outstanding performance from Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, before Issa Diop equalised in the first minute of stoppage time. After extra time failed to separate the sides, three missed Dutch penalties in the shootout ended their campaign. The Netherlands had finished top of Group F, drawing with Japan (2-2) before emphatic wins over Sweden (5-1) and Tunisia (3-1), mirroring their run to the quarter-finals at the 2022 World Cup.
Koeman, who served a first stint as Netherlands coach between 2018 and 2020 before returning to the role in January 2023, faced criticism throughout the tournament. His substitution decisions in the opening draw against Japan were widely blamed for allowing a late equaliser, and his choice to deploy five defenders against Morocco drew sharp complaints that it left the team outnumbered in midfield. Koeman defended his approach firmly, saying he would make the same tactical choices again.
In a statement that hinted strongly at retirement from coaching altogether, Koeman also paid tribute to his wife Bartina, who has been dealing with serious illness during his tenure. "When someone you love deeply is fighting a hard battle, your perspective changes," he wrote. "She supported and encouraged me every single day. I am more grateful for that than I will ever be able to express."
The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) confirmed it had accepted his decision with respect. Director of elite football Nigel de Jong thanked Koeman for his commitment and said a post-tournament evaluation was already under way, with the search for a new head coach beginning promptly given that the UEFA Nations League resumes in September. Separately, the KNVB condemned racist messages directed at the three Black Dutch players who missed penalties in the shootout, an episode that has cast a shadow over the country's World Cup exit.
