Alexander Zverev defeated Ben Shelton 6–3, 7–6 (2), 5–7, 6–2 on Sunday to claim the US Open title, his second Grand Slam of the year following his French Open triumph and the first US Open crown for a German man since Boris Becker in 1989. Shelton, who double-faulted on break point in the opening game and struggled to find his best tennis throughout, managed to take the third set after breaking Zverev when the German held two set points — only for Zverev to respond with an immediate break in the fourth to close out the match. In a remarkable moment at match point, Zverev did not realise he had won and moved to his position to serve another game before the result registered. "I know that today 99.9% of the people wanted Ben to win, so I'm very sorry," Zverev said during the trophy presentation, adding that he felt the crowd remained fair despite their partisan support for the home favourite.
