More than 5,000 people took to the streets of Barcelona on Sunday to protest a government-approved plan to expand El Prat Airport (a major international hub located 15 kilometres from the city centre, in the protected Llobregat Delta). Demonstrators — arriving on foot, by bicycle, and on tractors — condemned the project as an ecological and social aberration, with over 200 associations accusing the Spanish cabinet of approving the expansion quietly. Critics argue the development threatens a EU-protected natural park home to more than 250 bird species and would further strain a city already struggling with the pressures of mass tourism.
