Bolivia has signed a $20 million cooperation agreement with the United States to train and equip Bolivian security forces in the fight against drug smuggling, the country's foreign ministry announced. The deal marks a significant shift in relations between the two countries, coming 18 years after then-President Evo Morales expelled the US Drug Enforcement Administration from Bolivia — the world's third-largest producer of coca, the plant used to make cocaine. Under new centrist President Rodrigo Paz, Bolivia has also joined the Shield of the Americas, a US-led regional security initiative launched at a summit hosted by President Donald Trump in Florida in March.
