Hungary's prosecutor-general has requested that parliament lift the immunity of Prime Minister Péter Magyar, who took office in April after ending Viktor Orbán's 16-year rule. Magyar is under investigation over a 2024 incident in which he allegedly snatched a phone from a man filming him at a nightclub and threw it into the Danube river; he has dismissed the case as a "disgrace." The same request covers two former ministers from the Orbán era — ex-Culture Minister Balázs Hankó, accused of embezzling some €47 million in public funds partly to finance his 2026 election campaign, and ex-National Development Minister Miklós Seszták, suspected of taking millions in bribes linked to the overpriced purchase of second-hand buses between 2014 and 2018. The move comes as Magyar's government is already embroiled in a dispute with newly appointed President András Baka over who should be named the next prosecutor-general, a post that fell vacant in July after Magyar's parliamentary majority pressured the previous incumbent to resign.
