At least 100 people have been killed and more than 137,500 displaced across seven districts of Assam (a state in northeastern India) as prolonged monsoon rains have caused the Brahmaputra and other rivers to burst their banks. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority reports that 456 villages are currently submerged and nearly 12,000 hectares of cropland have been damaged, with Golaghat district the worst affected. Authorities have opened 125 relief camps sheltering nearly 50,000 people, while residents near the swollen Dhansiri river have been warned to keep away as water levels continue to rise.
