A self-proclaimed spiritual leader, identified as Shamim Reza Jahangir and believed to be in his 60s, was beaten to death by a mob in Bangladesh's Kushtia district on Saturday. Hundreds of people stormed his residence and attacked him with sticks, according to the district's chief administrative official. The killing is the latest incident of mob violence tied to religious tensions in Bangladesh, which has seen a significant surge in such unrest since the 2024 uprising that ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
