At least 25 people were killed in two coordinated gun attacks on Thursday along the Honduran coast. In the first, armed men opened fire on workers at an African palm plantation in the municipality of Trujillo (a northern coastal region long marked by agrarian conflict and tensions over land and environmental rights), killing at least 19. In a separate incident near Omoa in the Cortés department, close to the Guatemalan border, gunmen ambushed six police officers who were travelling from the capital Tegucigalpa on an anti-gang mission. The attacks underscore the persistent threat of gang and drug-trade-related violence in Honduras, a country that regularly ranks among the most dangerous in the world for environmental defenders.
