Two Argentine polling firms have found that a majority of citizens distrust President Javier Milei's recent hardening of rhetoric over the Falkland Islands (a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic claimed by Argentina as the Malvinas), despite the sovereignty cause enjoying broad public support. Consultancy Analogías found that 61% of respondents had little or no faith in Milei's new stance, while a social media analysis by Monitor Digital — tracking nearly 90,000 government mentions — concluded that although the government had succeeded in driving online discussion of the issue, the volume did not translate into political support. The shift follows a nationally televised address on September 3 in which Milei announced measures against oil development around the islands and sanctions against related individuals and companies, with a National Sovereignty Defense bill now headed to Congress; critics, however, argue the strategy mirrors the nationalist populism of the Kirchnerist governments Milei has long opposed.
