Brazilian right-wing influencer Paulo Figueiredo, a close ally of Eduardo Bolsonaro and a prominent lobbyist in Washington for sanctions against Brazil's government, has purchased two properties in Florida totalling the equivalent of roughly R$11.6 million (approximately $2.3 million), even as he owes R$4.9 million to the Brazilian federal government over a tax fraud scheme exposed by the Lava Jato anti-corruption investigation. The purchase of a six-bedroom mansion in Clermont, Florida, came just one month after Figueiredo told a U.S. bankruptcy court he lacked the funds to hire a lawyer to represent his company, International Treasure Group, which was found liable in connection with alleged fraudulent transfers linked to Chinese fugitive tycoon Miles Guo. Figueiredo, who has publicly claimed financial hardship and described himself as effectively unemployed due to political persecution in Brazil, also faces a R$102 million fine from Brazil's securities regulator (CVM) over alleged fraud connected to a hotel project developed in partnership with Donald Trump; he denies wrongdoing and insists both Florida properties are mortgaged and should not be counted as personal assets.
